How can I tighten the door on my GE Spacemaker microwave?
The thing is 23 hearts old but works perfect. Occasionally the door gets loose and doesn’t close tightly. This prevents the microwave from starting, unless you hold the door against the microwave. I had an appliance repair guy come out and do this before. I guess I should have paid attention. It didn’t take long.

The door itself is not adjustable. It is the door switch latch in the microwave. You will need to unplug it, remove the panel where the keypad is and loosen the screws where the door goes through the cabinet. Adjust the latch assembly and secure the screws. What is the longest lasting clothes washer today?
My mother needs a new clothes washer for her home as her old GE washer just gave out on her. I want to know what is the longest lasting and most reliable clothes washer these days. Thanks for the help!

I worked for 7 years in an appliance store doing sales, service, delivery and installation of major appliances and electronics. The company I work for has been in business for more than 40 years.
So I have had my share of experience with washers and dryers, to say the very least.
The very best washer that I have come across is the Whirlpool Estate model 4400 series.
It is not an expensive model and it does not have a lot of bells and whistles. You can have any color you want, as long as it is white.
It is, however the hardest working, longest lasting and best model of washing machine that we have ever sold. I do not hesitate to add that owner of this store will tell you the same, though they would like to sell you a more expensive model.
If you take care of this machine it will last you a very long time. If you do have to work on it, parts are in expensive and it is very easy to work on. Any part in this machine can be repaired or replaced in a half hour or less.
These machines, because they are simply built, they are easy to use too.
Now that I have built this machine up as being so good, let me give you some bad news. I have been told by colleagues that are still at my former company that Whirlpool is discontinuing the 4400 series. Because these washers are so cheap (we sold them for 379.00) and because they last so long, Whirlpool is dropped this line in favor of the more expensive models.
I am confident that you will be pleased, if you can find one to buy.
All that said, I will give my thoughts on purchasing a new washer.
Keep it simple. Simpler machines have fewer parts to fail.
Avoid electronics like the plague. One single component can render the machine useless and require you to replace an entire circuit board to repair it. This is very expensive.
Front loading washers require special, high effiency detergent which is more expensive. They also are much more complicated and have electronics. Their parts are expensive.
Purchase a name brand machine from an old recognized firm. I have repaired a LOT of samsungs, lg s, but fewer whirlpools.
Stay away from combo units or efficiency apartment units. I have yet to come across a single combo or stacked unit that was more than scrap metal.

How do I change the color of my oven door?
It is an older oven (maybe 1960’s) GE built-in wall oven. The color of the panel (no glass) is brown and I would like to change it black. Where would I find a panel to replace the brown one with?

If it is truly a “panel”, go to an appliance repair shop with dimensions and see if you can get a match up or even one larger that could be cut down.
Sometimes ovens, as dishwashers, have a stack of panels in the door with all the colors the manufacturer supplied, simply undo the frame work and either turn the panel over or find the panel of your liking.
If all that fails, you can paint it with high temp paint. Go to home depot, or lowes, high temp paints are very limited in colors, but black is a very common one
